HIKING, BIRDING Auckland Nature Reserve is part of the Hogsback State Forest and protects a 218-ha patch of indigenous forest. Both Auckland and Hogsback contain many pleasant spots for the hiker and naturalist. The visitor may see samango monkey, bushbuck and bushpig, and the blood-chilling calls of the tree dassie may be heard at night. The birdlife in the reserve is particularly rich and includes a number of rare species. Location: Central part of Eastern Cape; north-west of King William's Town. Access: From King William's Town travel west on the R63 towards Fort Hare and Alice for about 60 km; turn right onto the R345 to Hogsback and drive for approximately 32 km to the entrance. Alternatively, take the R346 and N6 northwards from King William's Town to Cathcart, turn left onto the R351 and then left again onto the R345, following signposts to Hogsback. The reserve is located approximately 50 km from Cathcart. Permits are required for both Auckland Nature Reserve and Hogsback State Forest. Accommodation: The Forestry Department runs a camping site which has basic facilities. The town of Hogsback has a variety of hotels and self-catering accommodation available. Other facilities: Network of marked trails within the reserve and within Hogsback State Forest. Open: Throughout the year Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
